Clay Aiken fans applaud story
Editor - Aidin Vaziri’s interview with Clay Aiken was great!
It’s about time that a reporter asked him some interesting and thought-provoking questions.
Jean Anzalone
Aiken, S.C.
Editor - Thanks for the Clay Aiken interview. I thought Aidin Vaziri asked pertinent questions and Clay answered in total honesty. He is confident in himself, yet not cocky or puffed up. That and his charismatic character, not to mention that spectacular voice, comedy and yet untapped talents, draw many fans to him. A great role model. We don’t need all the violence, sex and racism we hear and see in so many of the pop stars in the forefront that many young people are fed on. Clay is a breath of fresh air and just what middle America needs.

Clay Aiken appeals for world attention on Somalia

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

HARGEISA, Somalia (Reuters Life!) - Clay Aiken appealed on Wednesday for the world not to forget Somalia, where conflict and hunger have created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Aiken said U.S. and international interest in Somalia had been minimal since failed military intervention in the early 1990s.
“There hasn’t been much discussion of Somalia since the early 1990s in the U.S.,” said Aiken, a U.N. goodwill ambassador, on a visit to Somalia. “The American population kind of got a bad taste of Somalia in the early 90’s and hasn’t really had much interest in the country since.”

Music Review: Aimee Mann - Smilers

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

This CD was difficult for me to review for several reasons. First, I was a Mann-fan from back in her days with ‘Til Tuesday. Second, I lost track of her until a little over a year or so ago, when she sang on a Jim White song, “Static In The Radio." I wasn’t familiar with her name after this long absence, and I’d either never heard or never noticed Jim White’s name, but that particular song caught my attention.

Retro Redux: Goin’ To Kansas City With Wilbert Harrison

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

I'll have to confess that I didn't know much about Wilbert Harrison when I first heard him singing "
Kansas City,
" and in all honesty I don't think that I made much of an effort to find out at that time. In those days I was mostly just into enjoying the music, and his signature song immediately caught my attention and became one of my favorites.
That song reached number one on the charts in 1959, and was such a landmark performance that it probably helped create an unfair image of the singer/composer as a one-hit wonder. But he was actually a very versatile performer who recorded a number of good songs through the years, including "Stagger Lee," (video below) and  "Let's Work Together," which was also a hit for Canned Heat.
