Saturday, April 12th, 2008

cautions viewers to be careful when they call the numbers that allow them to vote for their favorite contestants.
And each week thousands of “American Idol” fans misdial.
Recently the calls have been pouring in to the phone bank of Internet Sales & Customer Services Support Inc., a telemarketing business in Blakeslee, Pa., owned by Henry Westendarp.
Mr. Westendarp received a toll-free phone number late last year, and things were running smoothly until “American Idol” started up again in January. Then, he said in an interview on Friday, he began to notice an uptick in phone calls on Tuesday evenings after his office closed. But USA TODAY was offered a chance to do an item on Clay’s new album, and the label offered to have him talk about it a little. The music reporters were otherwise occupied (crazy busy, actually), so I volunteered, figuring it would be a short chat and my fragile integrity could withstand the experience.

Coming attractions: Achin’ for some new Aiken? It’s on the way

Friday, April 4th, 2008

None more so, perhaps, than Roberto Clemente, the beloved Pirates legend who is the subject of an April 21
American Experience
biography. The first Latino to be named the World Series MVP, Clemente is still considered to be among the best players ever. But don’t expect the film to focus on his baseball legacy.
