Daze on the Mounts and Other Realms of Discovery

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

There’s a wonderful time during a clear morning, right before the sun comes up, that the sky is a twisting, fading rainbow; all the shades of dawn cradling the treetops and weaving the stillness into soundwaves.
If you quiet your mind and close your eyes, it is possible to hear these little tapestries rolling over each other like whales in deep water. Frequencies are being lit up by the freedom and solitude. Modulating and turning, stopping; then beginning again with renewed fervor. There is as much happening in the air here as in the middle of any metropolitan area, it’s just happening on a different plane. That is how I began to process this wonderful thing called

Sure, there was the blip caused by the emergence of former contestant David Hernandez’s past as a stripper. And the talent contest endured a fair amount  of criticism for showcasing
singers who’ve had record deals
in the past. But even those “controversies” didn’t  have  much  staying power.

Coaches return: Charlie Toft’s debut

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Our opening task is to try to choose the most likely male and female winners of Season 7, as well as the most likely to leave us first. Compared with my fellow judges, I may not be terribly well informed about music. But I think I know a little bit about how
American Idol
works–what fans respond to and how the different contenders play off of each other. My recent track record of predicting Chris Daughtry and Melinda Doolittle to be season winners proves that I know what I’m talki–er, what’s that? They didn’t? OK, well, if the show was all that predictable it wouldn’t be so popular.
