Exile on Jones Street: 8/23/07

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

There’s nothing quite like cracking a freshly printed budget. Just look at all those finely crafted numbers and . . . ahh, smell those special provisions.
This is the time of year when it becomes clearer what kind of last-minute “language” found its way into the budget and various other bills passed in the last few days of the session.
Among the Easter Eggs this year was a lil’ bit of legislation that sorta, kinda takes authority over part of Raleigh from Raleigh and puts it back in the hands of the legislature. Specifically, Senate Bill 1313 — sponsored by Wake’s own Sen. Janet Cowell — prevents the City of Oaks from imposing its building and zoning regulations over much of the state capital area.

Idol: The Musical opens and closes in one night!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

almost saw his name in the big lights of Broadway.  Idol: The Musical opened on August 12th and closed the same night.
The show depicted young intense fans of Idol’s season 2 loser Clay Aiken who was trying to get out of the small town in North Carolina where he lived.
Idol: The Musical
evidently closed because it lacked advance ticket sales, positive feedback from audience members and critics, and sustainable financial resources, according to a statement.

Broadway Not Aiken for Claymates Musical

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

An “American Idol”-themed musical inspired by Clay Aiken and his army of obsessive fans has gone up in smoke just one day after it went up in lights on a Broadway marquee. Did we mention it was about Clay Aiken obsessives?
“Idol: The Musical,” billed as a satirical look at a troupe of Clay-mates from Ohio, opened two days ago at the 45th Street Theater, and promptly flopped like Clay’s clammy hand on Kelly Ripa’s mouth just a day later. The show’s producer, Todd Ellis, said that he was shutting down the show because of a “lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources.” The rough English translation? It sucked real bad.

Tori Spelling settles into inn life

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

You’d never know it from watching this video, but Tori was battling a migraine headache the day I visited her Chateau LaRue B&B in Fallbrook, Calif. (about two hours outside L.A.). But not once did she complain, even when we asked her to show us around the grounds in the hot, blinding sunlight. Tori and Dean had only one concern — that the time they spent for the interview wouldn’t force them to ignore their paying guests.

Before we get to the topic at hand, thanks for your comments of support regarding numbers and bias. Always much appreciated. And speaking of numbers and bias, after a near-record number of comments, I’ve got the results for your Season 2 vote on where the finalists should have placed.
A lot of you called this the best season in Idol history, and the passion has clearly endured. I really enjoyed reading the votes that came in with added commentary on the finalists; very illuminating.
