Ah, the anxiety of theatrical influence: that show biz-specific condition whereby one performer, or production, exists in the difficult shadow of another. For the art form to renew itself, plays clearly must be revisited, their tempo and temperament tested from scratch by the changing times. But that same necessity can create problems for those involved with the production at hand, which has to exist on its own terms for today's audience while being judged against some pretty powerful memories by those with the inclination — not to mention the sheer longevity — that enables them to do so.

American Idol Has Massive Impact on Radio Airplay

LOS ANGELES, March 13 /PRNewswire/ — American Idol, has had a massive impact on radio airplay since its debut six years ago, according to Mediabase, which monitors more than 1,800 radio stations 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, in more than 180 U.S. and Canadian markets. The blockbuster hit television show is now responsible for generating more than six million radio spins. This week alone, 12 former American Idol contestants are on the charts or close to making it on.

Regis — Bypassed by Docs, Bathed by Kelly?

Regis Philbin is going under the knife this week for bypass surgery, and looks like he’ll have the services of a preternaturally perky nurse — his co-host Kelly Ripa — should he want them.
Philbin
announced on this morning’s
“Live with Regis and Kelly” that he’s going to have heart bypass surgery after experiencing shortness of breath and chest pains. His preferred mode of treatment was angioplasty — “Bang, bang, bang, they blow it open,” as he described it — but doctors insisted on the more invasive bypass.

‘Idol’ finalists’ ambition: Meld talent, personality

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – As cameras rapidly flashed nearby, rockers Chris Sligh and Gina Glocksen gave each other a high five on a crowded, noisy red carpet.
“It is a huge, huge thrill,” Sligh said. “Who knew a chubby guy from South Carolina could go this far?”
Sligh and Glocksen talked above the commotion of reporters and photographers last week on a large balcony at the Pacific Design Center. Just two hours earlier, they and 10 other new celebrities learned they were finalists on “American Idol.”
